"As Hamilton's views evolved, however, and he began to publish the outspoken anti-British pieces that made up his reputation, he used the deabating club at King' college to preview his essays." "As Hamilton's views evolved, however, and he began to publish the outspoken anti-British pieces that made up his reputation, he used the deabating club at King's college to preview his essays." Page 53. Basically Hamilton's views on the American revolution in the debate club. He published his opinions on the english and being in the colonies he saw the revolution going on which formed his opinions against the English parliament. "The colonial struggle against the Criwb took a dramatic turn on the moonlit night of December 16, 1773, around the time that Hamilton entered King's College." "A mob of two hundred men with soot-darkened faces, roughly costumed as Mohawk Indians, crept aboard three ships in Boston harbor, used tomahawks to smash open 342 chests of tea, and pitched the contents overboard." Page 54. As Hamilton lived in the new colony he saw protest and the things the English parliament was doing to the 13 colonies. Hamilton was a new student/just enrolled at King's College and all of those protest. When Alexander was 14 years old a hurricane hit the island of Nevis. Hamilton then writes a letter which is very well written. "On November 11, 1769, in his earliest surviving letter, the fourteen-year-old Hamilton Vented the blackest pent-up despair." Chapter 2 page 30. The letter was received by his friend and lookalike Edward Stevens, he was was beginning his studies at King's college in New York. Hamilton so he may go to North America for an education. Alexander arrives in New York and is inrolled in King's College. This is the rising action due to Hamilton starting his adventures as an immigrant in the 13 colonies during the American revolution time period. I believe that Hamilton will be some how affected by the revolution or the protest that were going on.After Peter Lytton’s death during the years of 1765 and 1769, the Hamilton brothers knew that their father was gone, their mother died, Peter either committed suicide or was killed, and their uncle, aunt, and grandmother also died. ”Let us pause briefly to tally the grim catalog of disasters that had befallen these two boys between 1765 and 1769: their father had vanished, their mother had died, their cousin and supposed protector had committed bloody suicide, and their aunt, uncle, and grandmother had all died.”-Ron Chernow’s words on page 26 paragraph 62. So James Hamilton, Alexander’s older brother, became an apprentice to a carpenter named James McNobeny and Alexander was sent to live with a merchant named Thomas Steven. “While James went off to train with the elderly carpenter, Hamilton, in a dreamlike transition worthy of Dickens novel, was whisked off to the King Street home of Thomas Stevens, a well-respected merchant, and his wife, Ann.”- Paragraph 64 of page 27. Edward Steven, who was a year older than Alexander, became his closest friend, as they matured the displayed parallel personalities. They were both quick and clever, disciplined and persevering, fluent in French, quoted/versed classical history, were outraged by slavery, and were fascinated by medicine. I have yet to read about any conflict but I believe deeper in Alexander Hamilton’s life there will be many conflicts. Mostly during the American Revolution era.

Reading log #1Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States of America or the 13 British colonies. He was born in Nevis, an island in the British West Indies. “Alexander Hamilton claimed Nevis in the British West Indies as his birthplace, although no surviving records substantiate this.”-Paragraph one on page 7 of Ron Chernow’s Alexander Hamilton. He was born in the year 1757 (claimed by his family.) to James Hamilton, his father, a nobleman and the fourth child out eleven children which meant he was also penniless because of no chance of inheritance. He was not married to Hamilton’s mother, Rachel Faucette Lavien Hamilton. Alexander did change through out this story, his mother went through a divorce, after two years his mother died. Rachel’s property went to Lavien’s son, Peter. With no money they went to live with their mother’s first cousin, Peter Lytton. Whom was a failed businessman and a bankrupted grocer. In July of 1769 Peter Lytton was found in his bed dead and covered in a pool of his own blood, it could have been murder or suicide. “On July 16, 1769, just when the Hamilton boyd must have imagined that fate couldn’t dole out more horrors, Peter Lytton was found dead in his bed, soaked in a pool of blood. According to court records, he had committed suicide and either “stabbed or shot himself to death.”- Ron Chernow’s words on page 26 paragraph 61. |
